The PCs must escape from behind enemy lines. The best way to do that is by river, but the pirates control the rivers. (Central Africa is covered with rivers, making river travel the most used form of transportation.)
Many Central African cities and countries are widely accessible via boats and barges that travel along the Ubangi river and its tributaries. The Ubangi river begins in Sudan and ends in Republic of the Congo. Travel by boat along the Ubangui river is limited until the rainy season picks up. Although slow, it is possible to reach all the way to Kinshasa and Brazzaville via the river.
