Aman is the Directorate of Military Intelligence of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Aman is an abbreviatin of Agaf HaModiin (lit. "the Intelligence Section). The directorate was created in 1950, when the Intelligence Department was spun off from the IDF's General Staff. Aman is an independent directorate, and not part of the Ground Forces, Navy or the Israeli Air Force. The directorate is headed by a Major General (Heb. אלוף Aluf).
Intelligence Corps Edit
(Heb. חיל המודיעין) Heil HaModi'in also known by its acronym Haman. Responsible for collecting, disseminating, and publishing intelligence information for the General Staff and the political branch. The corps also engages in counter-intelligence and information security work, and presents general assessments.
Research Department Edit
(Heb. חטיבת המחקר) Responsible for analysis of information gathered by Aman's collection units and from the Intelligence Community at large; and forming tactical, strategic, and operative assessments, as well as reporting on the likelihood of war, and presenting these to military and political decisionmakers, including the Prime Minister. The department works closely with Mossad and the Shin Bet.
Sayeret Maktal Edit
(Heb. סיירת מטכ"ל) Sayeret Matkal, the General Staff Reconnaissance Unit. The main n special forces unit of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). Its main roles are counter-terrorism, deep reconnaissance and intelligence gathering, but the unit is first and foremost a field intelligence-gathering unit, used to obtain strategic intelligence behind enemy lines. Sayeret Matkal is also in charge of hostage rescue missions outside Israeli borders. The unit is modeled on the British SAS, and organizationally reports to the Directorate of Military Intelligence. Its IDF nickname is simply "The Unit". The unit's motto is "Who Dares Wins".
