The 'Special Republican Guard (SRG) is an elite division in the Iraqi Republican Army, a Soviet-supported force.
The SRG division has 4 brigades: 2 infantry, 1 armored, and 1 security (military police). It is a “praetorian guard” charged with protecting the Iraqi President, key presidential and government sites, and responding to any rebellion, coup, or other internal security threat. The SRG receives better pay and benefits than other members Iraqi military.
